Married

One of the things I rarely think about is marriage. But I've been sitting at the computer for the last few hours helping a friend with her wedding program. She's getting married tomorrow.

I think when my Dad passed away, one of my biggest sorrows was knowing he would never see the grandchildren he so wanted. Although I'm not an only child, I am my father's only child. Blood of his blood. He loved his other grandchildren given to him by his stepsons. He spoiled them, ate their vegetables so they wouldn't get in trouble, and snuck them cookies when their mom's weren't looking. But he waited for the day when he could hold my child in his arms.

So knowing that my kids would never personally know their grandfather, along with the knowledge that my Dad would never meet my husband, those were tough things to swallow for me.

I'd have to say, I've not ever really given marriage a lot of thought. My mind was always busy elsewhere. Planning, doing, thinking. To be honest it is much the same now. I would like to be married, I always wanted a whole bunch of kids, but....well, I'm neither.

But every once in a while, I do think about it. And I wonder if I'll ever know what it is like.

Anthropologie inspired Bedding DIY

I adore 99.99% of Anthropologie. I could live in that store! Unfortunately, not everything I want is what my budget can afford. Eeek.... But when I can, I shop Anthro. Love, love, love Anthropologie.

Lately I've been itching to do something with my bedding. Maybe my whole bedroom, but starting with the bed. So here is where I currently am.

I liked it but I'm ready for a change.

On a budget, change on a budget. None of these gorgeous Anthro bedding ensembles for me....(but aren't they beautiful?)

Or this lovely grey.

But hey, I'm adventurous. So I thought, with all the DIY inspiration we see on Pinterest, why didn't I give my bedding an Anthropologie inspired makeover? One of my favorite places to shop is TJ Maxx. In my former Interior Designer life, I worked with people who wanted to update or remodel their spaces but didn't have a high-end budget, and TJ Maxx can be very affordable.

I found a simple grey quilt, $29.99, a grey queen sheet set, $24.99, a full sized white with grey scrolly-kind of print for $16.99 and two grey standard pillow cases for $9.99.

It is my idea to make the quilt into a duvet cover using part of the sheet set and to design some kind of bedskirt using a mix and match of both sheet sets. And hopefully I have some material left over to make some throw pillow covers.

Hmmmm......

We shall see! Stay tuned, I'm diving in!

Made in the USA?

I'd have to say I consider myself a patriot. Actually, a pretty hard-core, I-bleed-red-white-and-blue, kind of patriot. I love America. I support our troops. I could go on, but I think you get the general idea of what I am saying.

I've always tried to buy American, you know, do my part. But until I started designing and making bags, I didn't realize the issues American designers and crafters deal with. All the pieces and parts and necessary items that make up our products can get pretty costly. That combined with our time, and well.  our prices can't compete with the big name brands that manufacture overseas.

While on a recent trip to a big name discount store, my mom and I were looking at the bags and commenting on the various styles and prices. $9.99, $15.99, $29.99. I looked at all the hardware and parts on each bag and asked my mom, how in the world could they make this bag and sell it for such a low price? Then I saw it, the tag. Made in China. Which piqued my curiosity, how many of these bags had the same tag? Without exception, every bag I picked up had the same tag. Made in China. As I went through the rest of the store, looking at artwork, dog beds, kitchen ware, women's clothing and shoes...I saw the same disheartening tag or label. Where was the Made in the USA stuff?

The thing is, the American made items are out there. I was just surprised at how little of it there is in our main shopping venues. I can't get into why people manufacture overseas. There could be a number of reasons, good reasons. And it is their freedom to have their products made wherever our laws allow.

I am not saying you should check every label and tag and not buy anything that doesn't say "Made in the USA". That just sounds way too tiresome and wouldn't that take all the fun out of shopping? Truth is, there are some really nice things that are made in places outside of the United States. I can think of a few things off the top of my head that are truly crafted with pride and obvious attention to detail. Some of them I own and would buy again in a heartbeat. My Great-Uncle Voar Shoemake used to always tell my Dad, you get what you pay for. I agree. I'm not a shopping snob, but I would rather save up my money and buy one well-made product from Nordstrom than get 20 cheaply manufactured items from a big name discount store. For me, its about quality.

Without a shadow of a doubt, when you are out shopping this Christmas, you'll be able to find things much less expensive than a hand-crafted item. I'd love to say it works differently than that, but it doesn't.

Recently I've had the privilege to meet so many local artisans. For the most part, they are stay at home moms, who have carefully honed their talents into well made products. They are a one woman company. They handle the marketing, the purchasing, the designing, the production, the packaging, the selling and the customer service all on their own. They juggle the many social media outlets necessary to get your product out in the public. They email, research, and continuously refine their product to meet the public demand. And they do it so well.

I wonder if you would take a moment to think about who you are supporting as you shop. As you go down your list, it won't be probable to buy everything USA or support a local artisan. But maybe you can find a few items that will. American talent and ingenuity is out there and I'm sure like me, they would appreciate your business.

This isn't my soap box and I'm not preaching to anyone. These are just my thoughts, wonderings and musings. I know, I'm soooo deep.

The moral of the story is...

I've had some pretty embarrassing moments, but this one....this one tops them all!

And the moral of the story is, when you add someone as a friend,
you should ALWAYS look at their FB photos.

Sabrina

First let me say, I don't design bags I don't like. I guess I wouldn't know how to do that! Some bags appeal to my own personal style (whatever that is!) others I just adore because the fabric and the style came together in such a, dare I say, magical way!

But when I arrived at the finishing steps of the Sabrina bag, my stars! I LOVED IT! I stopped and sent off a quick email to the gal I was designing for, and told her the bag was seriously gorgeous.

And so we have "Sabrina". Named of course, after the amazing woman for whom I was privileged to design this gorgeous bag.

I debuted Sabrina earlier this week on my Facebook page and she is already a big hit. So I had to quickly limit how many I would be able to make available before Christmas. At this time, I can only take 3 more orders if you want the bag delivered in time for Christmas. You will be able to choose the hardware that fits your personal style the best.

She's gorgeous and I'm so happy to make the Sabrina part of my collection.
She's available in the shop now.

Wanted: Talent, Passion & Hard Work

This has been an interesting week. I've had three people ask me about starting a hand-crafted business. I'm definitely not an expert by any means, not even close! But I'm happy to share my insight to those who inquire. So many helped me along the way, (even though they may not have known they were doing so!) that helping someone else just seems like the only proper thing to do. Plus, I really like doing it!

I know I've mentioned this several times previously, but I was first inspired by a girl I went to college with. I started seeing my friends on Facebook share these photos of cute embellished hoodies from Evy's Tree. So I clicked over to the Facebook page and found that Amy (aka, girl I went to college with) had started her own handcrafted business of these adorable embellished hoodies. She also had a blog, which once I started reading, found myself fascinated with her hutzpah. Amy's blog is great. She's incredibly down-to-earth and so transparent with her journey as a stay at home mom and woman in business. She blogs about the joys and craziness of her family, her passion for God, and her sometimes uncertainty as the Evy's Tree business grows.

Amy is probably the top reason I took the leap into handbag design and self-employment. She unknowingly was inspiring me and helping me as I began navigating the hand-crafted world. I've followed her blog and watched her business, and applied all that I could into my own path.

I do hope to someday be an inspiration to someone else who is tossing around the idea of starting their own hand-crafted biz. Yes, it is a bit daunting. And yes, "you will have to build it". But here's the thing, it is true, when you are doing something that you are passionate about, the hard work isn't so...hard.

First Fall Weekend!

Yes, I'm happy to have the fall season here! For some reason, I have a strange attraction to chilly mornings. This time of the year also makes me remember the beautiful colors of fall when I lived in Columbus, Ohio. So pretty.

Although I've already had my first cup of coffee, and spent a very dusty hour or so cleaning in my garage, I'd like nothing more than a quick shower, another cup o' joe, and to curl up back under the covers with a book. (the book I found while cleaning the garage...)

But alas, sewing and pending orders are sweetly calling my name so nix the book idea. I wonder if there is a way to design some kind of contraption where I would be able to sew while laying in bed...

But speaking of fall and sewing, I just wanted to say thank you all so much for the wonderful feedback I've received on the Fall-Winter Collection of bags. You all have been truly kind and I appreciate that you take the time to let me know your thoughts. Some of you have even shared your suggestions with me, which is wonderful as well. I am grateful to be able to take in another point of view. Please, keep emailing, FB'ing and messaging me! I like hearing from you.

My AMAZING photographer, Yvonne DeCarlo of "With Life In Mind" Photography, sent me another photo from the shoot and I just had to share it with you. I'd say it is my favorite, but then really, I think so many of them are my favorite!

Peace out ya'll!

Guest Blogger - Sheena S.

The single sentiment I hear most often when people see a Daylin Skye Designs bag in person is, "Wow, the picture didn't do it justice!" Although I am so glad to hear this, I ask myself all the time, how can I improve what is seen online to convey more about the bags? While I haven't yet figured out how to improve the photos, I did ask a recent client if she would be my guest on the blog and give her first-hand experience with a Daylin Skye bag. I thought perhaps seeing my designs from an outside vantage point might be beneficial. Without further ado....

From the first time I met Amber, I knew she was someone special. Anyone who has talked with her knows what I mean when I say she truly cares and is interested in what you have to say. Even more, I was lucky enough to be at her house warming party and let me just say, this girl has boldness in her design style that anyone would envy. Seriously, just take a look at her before & after home redesign photos... can you say aaa-mazing?!

So our mutual Pinterest and DIY-on-a-budget design obsessions, along with my huge respect of her courage to follow her dreams, pretty instantly made me a fan of Daylin Skye Designs. After only one up-close-and-personal peek at one of her bags, I was apparently mentioning how beautiful and high quality they were to my husband so much that he decided that a Daylin Skye Designs bag would be my next birthday present.

It just makes me laugh to think of my husband being all sneaky to have a bag designed for me! I even remember Amber, err Daylin Skye Designs, making a Facebook post about how she was designing a bag for someone and that she loved it so much that she wished she could keep it. I too, was wishing that bag she was creating was for me, and lo and behold, it was!

My husband and I always give each other birthday gifts at midnight the night before our actual birthday. So when the clock struck 12am on August 25th, I got to dig into a super cute gift bag filled with tons of tissue paper to find an absolutely gorgeous Daylin Skye Designs purse made just for me!!! I was ecstatic to say the least.

He then started admitting to a few little white-lies he had to say to keep me from figuring out his present to me. (i.e., staying overtime at work, but really meeting Amber to pick the bag up) Haha. Love him so much!

I knew every bag from Daylin Skye Designs was custom-made and one-of-a-kind, so I asked how he knew what to choose. He explained that he chatted with Amber about what types of purses I already have (colors, styles, etc.) and that from there he simply gave her the freedom to design and create what she thought I'd love - and boy do I love it!

I'm not sure if it was discussed before the design phase or if Amber reads minds, but the bag just happens to include some of my all-time favorite colors -- teal, white, and a sandy saddle. Amazing.

The white and teal material Amber chose for the trim is a perfect balance of being simple, fun, elegant, and very unique - almost abstract, really. The leather is a perfect saddle color that I'm realizing goes with everything! The interior of the bag is just as gorgeous with a super silky and fun polka-dot lining. Then there are two of my favorite features of my new bag: the built-in iPad sleeve and the uber convenient key clip. Woohoo! No more digging for days to find my keys and it looks like I now have an excuse to get an iPad!

I can't even count how many compliments I've received on my new Daylin Skye bag. I have used it almost every day since receiving it on my birthday almost a month ago. It is the perfect size and style for all seasons and occasions, very durable, comfortable to carry, and undeniably gorgeous. I just love that I get to carry something around every day that is one-of-a-kind and custom designed for me!

Constant State of Change

I've been playing with paint this weekend and thought I'd share some before and after photos with you!

First my master bedroom. I changed the color of the mirror and the dresser. I chose grey because I wanted to ground the colors a little. I felt like using the darker grey would give the room a more consistent flow. Although it is still a work in progress, here is where it currently stands!

Another room I worked a bit on was my master bathroom. I changed the shelves.

So the cool thing is these are all re-purposed items!

Mirror - $10
Dresser - $5
Bathroom Shelves - $4
2 Cans of Spray Paint - $7
(the dark grey paint was leftover from another project)

Yay!!!

Happy Labor Day...peace ya'll!

In the shop now...the "Keem" bag

When my Aunt Kim asked me to design a bag for her, I was excited to take on the task of putting her personality and style into fabric.

Kim is my Dad's youngest sister. The baby of the family. She was an unexpected bundle of joy that came along when my grandmother was 47 years old. And actually, they could have easily named her "Joy". She loves life and has the most infectious laugh. I can't count the times she and I have dissolved into fits of giggles and laughter over something only she and I thought was funny. The rest of the family looking at us as though we had lost our ever-loving minds. (hahaha...we probably had!)

I'm very happy with the way the "Keem" bag turned out. This larger style bag with a little extra in the design. The interior is a chocolate brown and ivory polka dot (of course, ya'll know I love polka dots!) It has all the usual pockets and key clip on the inside, and additional key clip and detachable matching petite pocket on the outside. (see the photo below)

My Aunt "Keem" has, umm....how shall I say...she has a taste for the more high-end bags. (no brand names mentioned...) So I'm honored that she would want to add a Daylin Skye bag to her collection.

In the words of Oprah...

I think I heard Oprah once say, "Love is in the details"

So true!

I hope that once you buy a Daylin Skye Designs handbag, you never see anything but the outside of your bag. However, if you were to take a peek in between the seams, this is part of what you would see.

The photo above is the lining that went into the Neecy Bag. The see-thru is the interfacing which after it is applied to the fabric is then all serged so there aren't any fraying edges. Then it is sewn once, checked for fitting and sewn again for quality assurance and my own peace of mind. (Congratulations again, mi amiga, Amy Parnell, who won the Neecy bag just by sharing a photo!)

Although I don't work from a pattern (that part is just in my head), the quality process on the bags are all pretty much the same. I follow the contractor adage my Dad instilled in me, measure twice - cut once! When it comes to the sewing process, I want to make sure I'm putting a product together for you that won't fall apart on you! I test most things out on myself first. I'm pretty hard on bags, so they get slung over my shoulder, thrown onto the seat of the car, or buried in a shopping cart under miscellaneous items from my latest trip to the local hardware store. By trial and error, I've discovered which straps and attachments work best under constant stress. The key points and places I need to triple reinforce and backstitch to ensure durability. So if you decided to load up your Daylin Skye Designs bag with, books, a laptop, groceries, a pair of high heels, water bottles, file folders, a hammer or your dog (yes, all things I've put in my bag!), then the seams and linings and straps are all going to hold fast.

100% Made in the USA, hand crafted and designed by me.

Yes... "Love is in the details".

Rocker re-vamp

If you had asked me two years ago if I wanted to go to a garage sale with you, I would have politely declined. Just not my thing. First because I don't do junk. Second because I can't concentrate when there is clutter. (stuff piled on top of stuff) And third because umm...I don't know the garage sellee's habits of cleanliness. Yes I know, I sound awfully snotty. Oh well...moment of truth.

However, since I moved into my new casa, I have re-evaluated the cost benefits of buying at a garage sale. The three points above still hold very true. If my mom and I pull up to a garage sale that looks really junky, I generally stay in the car. Same holds true if it is super cluttered. And as for cleanliness, well there are certain things I just don't buy second hand. However, wood furniture or pieces that can be "re-purposed", now that might just be a deal.

This rocking chair looked like something I could have fun with and it was only $5.

I bought two cans of spray paint from the local hardware store and gave it a new look.

I chose to rough up the edges a bit to give it a worn and comfy look.

And gave it a new home in my bedroom.

Spray painting can be addicting! And I don't mean the smell. (although maybe that is too...I'll get back to you on that...) Once I have a can of spray paint in my hand, I find myself looking around at what else I can "re-purpose". It is fun and easy and quick.

It is also easy to fix if you, say...happen to spray paint a mirror frame a bright green apple shade.... Yeah, so ummm...that was not the look I was going for...

Take a break...just do it!

I just spent the last couple of hours outside working around the house, spray painting various projects. Basically avoiding the sewing machine. Not good... Don't get me wrong, I absolutely enjoy sewing. I just needed a break.

You know the kind of break you've known for a long time you needed to take, but the ever-present demands of job, work, life...they all flash their neon list of things to do at you. As if to say, "GET ME DONE".

Come on now...enough is enough. So I'm taking a break to type out this email and stay in touch with all of you because without you and your support, this handbag design business would be.... well, I don't know. But I know it wouldn't be the same. And to say, I hope you all are taking a break this weekend. All you mom's who work full-time and overtime, all the single ladies out there kicking a** and taking names. All you men, who are out there doing what is right for you and your families.... I hope you take a break this weekend. I hope you find a few minutes to steal away and be still for a bit.

Trust me... the work, the demands, the get-it-done lists... they will all be there when you get back. It really is ok to take a break.

The "Roxy" Bag

Introducing Roxy

Just slightly larger than the average Daylin Skye Bag, the Roxy has a little extra length on the straps to be worn comfortably at hip length or cross-body. Extra large pocket on the interior for a journal or iPad, and separate pockets for a cell phone, sunglasses or whatever you choose to carry.

And as always, the interior key clip.

Introducing the Daylin Skye Featured Bags

I like trying new things, seeing what works for ya'll and what works for Daylin Skye Designs. So I thought I'd try a weekly post and where I can introduce a new bag to you and discount the price for one week. I'm hoping you guys will enjoy seeing the new designs as much as I enjoy sharing them.

For sure I have to start off with the "Carrie" bag. Before I post the photo, I have to tell ya'll that I was immediately drawn to this striking, slightly undefined flower print from the moment I laid eyes on it. I do like flowers, but as with most things I like, I'm not too keen on "same-old-same-old". So this dark teal and creamy cotton color print was right up my alley.

I'm also a major fan of polka dots. Seriously! I have to restrain myself, from using polka dots with everything. So when I was designing this bag and deciding what to put together, I was too thrilled to trim it with the navy with white polka dotted fabric! Adding the bright aqua scroll-printed floppy bow, well really, need I say more? She's just adorable. It has been difficult not to just pull it from the shop and keep it for myself!

I haven't decided if the "Carrie" bag will be a MBE Original, meaning, I won't duplicate it for any other orders. For now, there is just the one.

From July 19th - July 26th, the Carrie bag will be 25% off. One week only!

www.daylinskye.com

Is it just me or does everyone love their graphic designer this much? Brooke Foreman of www.rightleftstudio.com is quite simply amazing.

I feel like a new mommy! Every time I type in www.daylinskye.com and see the front page she designed my heart gets a little flutter. If I were getting a tattoo today it would probably say "I heart Brooke ". Lol!

~ Peace ya'll

Location:Isn't she lovely?

Houston....we have liftoff!

Finally, the end to a long, and eventful day. If only I had the energy to put sheets on my bed... Lol, yes that kind of day.

First there was Ed. I normally work alone at the Bedford office. That is if you don't count Masie the coon hound and Wiley the lab mix who bound into the office to greet me with wagging tails and bodies big enough to knock you down. But those two companions aside, I'm usually alone. Usually. Until today. Today I met Ed.

Ed first made himself known when I moved a big pile of documents. I saw him quickly appear and then disappear again under a table-top filing bin. Let me just say those six (or eight) legs of his certainly allow him to move fast. After looking for him I decided to let him be. After all, if he was willing to go into hiding and stay there, who was I to stop him? A few hours later as I was entering info into a billing statement, Ed reappeared. Right next to my hand as I typed.

I didn't give Ed the credit he deserved.

Ed has been taking steroids and working out on a pretty regular basis. He also has a tattoo that says, "Bring It".

Hold the sheets mother forklift and shut the front door!

I screamed like the girl I am and promptly doused the office in three layers of bug spray. I spent the rest of the day on the other side of the office. Ed won. That side of the office is now his.

I came home only to be notified by the contractor (aka, little Gary, my brother) that we have a leak somewhere in our plumbing. I say somewhere because we still don't know where. They are going to have to break open some parts of the walls to figure out the source.

Then I had to make a paint run to Home Depot, only to get stuck in traffic because a Humvee being driven by a Marine hit the Humvee he was following behind. Something tells me is buddies aren't going to let him live that one down anytime soon...

Follow that with program issues on the computer and emailing back and forth with my web designer as she worked on my last minute website edits. An eventful day.

But the new web page is up and I simply adore it. (Check it out...www.daylinskye.com)

Thanks Brooke, you are wonderful and I'm truly thrilled to have you as my designer.

The day before

It is the day before my website/shop opens and I'm a bit anxious, nervous and even a bit unsure. Did I make the right choice? Was resigning from my corporate job the right move or was it a leap from the "frying pan into the fire"? Have I done enough? Will people like my designs? Should I have stuck with the tried and known path? So many questions in my mind made me look back at my life and where I am now.

I don't know that my life has ever looked much like anyone else's. But maybe that is what we all think? Aren't we all more alike than we are different?

I was born to a couple who were very much in love with each other. I am their only child although I have four half brothers who came along much earlier than me. There is a nine-year gap between myself and the youngest brother who, for the most part, was the only one I was raised with. I was the annoying, terrible, bratty younger sister that followed him around, and pretty much made his life miserable.

My dad was a preacher and when I was seven our family moved into 35 ft trailer, pulled by a big black boat of a car. The four of us and our German Shepard travelled the southwestern parts of the United States "evangelizing". Which means churches would request that my dad come to their city to hold a revival and we would park our trailer next to their church for a week or two weeks while while my dad preached for them and then move on to the next city and church. I'd have to ask my mom if I ever questioned our life, but as far as I recall, it was just my life. Just how we lived.

During those years between the age of 7 and 15, we did have a few cities that we called home for longer than a few weeks. My dad pastored churches in Johnson City, Texas, Friona, Texas, and Childress, Texas. All of those places left me with great memories. The Blue Bonnets, peaches and rattle snakes in Johnson City. The scar still visible on the back of my leg from trying to show off on a three-wheeler, learning to drive on dusty country roads, and the friends who became family in Friona. The red-dirt dust storms and unmentionable teenage antics (none of which escaped my mom's attention!) in Childress. People, places and things I'll never forget.

Growing up on the road shaped my life. I met so many different kinds of people, experienced many different cultures and styles of living. It is most likely why I enjoy traveling and being out on the open road. Getting up before daybreak, packing up the car and hitting the road. The quiet noise of the car's engine humming and the soothing sound of the tires as they move you across the cities and states. Watching the scenery as it changes.

When I look at the landscapes, the varied terrains, mountains, valleys, deserts and oceans that I've experienced first-hand in America and Europe, I know that my love for color and texture and creating new spaces and designs, all comes from God. He is a truly amazing artist, and if my inspiration comes from any source, it comes from him. In the end I haven't really "created" anything new, I'm just copying the master.

It is my hope people enjoy my designs and carrying the unique expression of their individuality. Alike in so many ways and yet so distinctly just theirs.

~ I wish you peace and thank you for your support.

Puppy Love

I have to laugh at myself sometimes with all my posts and photos of my adorable puppy Rexy. But honestly, he is such a love!

I was raised with dogs in the home. When I was born we had a beautiful Silver Bar German Shepard named, Duchess. She was wonderful. My mom tells me that I would crawl all over her, sit on her, pull her ears and she would endure it for a while, then just get up and walk away. She lived to be 13 years old. Which for a German Shepard, is a long life span.

After Duchess, we have mostly had  short-haired dachshunds. There was Sugar, Baby, Dundee and another Sugar. Then, after much begging and pleading, my parents bought me Sparky, a beautiful girl Dalmatian. Then Ginny, Digger and Sophia, all red doxies.

When I went out to help my mom get a new puppy, I met Rex. I wasn't even looking for a puppy. But this sweet little, long-haired, red doxie boy just wanted to be held. I remember, I sat down on the living room floor to hold him and he crawled up my chest, put his nose almost touching mine, and just stared at me. Unblinking, he didn't even try to lick me.

That was all she wrote, I was sunk, head-over-heels in love!
This is, Rock Rex Stetson Day. I mean really! Look at those ears!

He is the most amazing dog. First, he is super chill. Not much phases him. He loves to go riding in the car. (As long as he can sit on my lap.) I know you all won't believe this, (I have it on video!) but he goes potty on command. Seriously. He is just the best.

So there is all my lovey dovey talk about my little Rexy-love. He is the best!

Lovely Sunday

Southern California Sunday morning....beautiful. I'm pretty much an early morning person. This morning I sat out on my back porch sending off emails on my iPad, drinking coffee and enjoying my sweet doggy on my lap. The neighborhood is quiet with just the sounds of the birds chirping.

Soon my neighbors will be up. I'll hear the sounds of kids playing and the music from my next door neighbor's teenagers. (good thing they like decent music!)

Sunday's are just lovely days.

Always and forever

It is one of those days. Those that make you grateful for what you have, and remember with mixed emotions, those beautiful people who have passed from this life to the next.

It is Father's Day.

It was nice to see so many of my friends on Facebook take a moment to celebrate the Dads, husbands and brothers in their lives. As did I. However, I was one of a few friends who's post was to honor our Dads who have passed away.

The other night some family friends stopped by my place. We stood together looking at the wall of photos in my living room. Among the many photos hanging there are those with my Dad in them. They remarked that it was so difficult to grasp that he had passed away. To them he was still so present. As though at any moment he would be walking in the door having just returned from a ride on his Victory motorcycle. I told them my mom and I feel the same way. He's just out having coffee with my Uncle Tony, or he is off on a ride. We will soon get a text from him telling us when he will be home. I think that is why my mom and I never use the word gone when referring to my Dad's death. He is with us still. Maybe it is because he was so big in life that his memory has a way continuing to fill space.

I have to tell you, he is one of the most handsome men you've ever seen. He is one of those manly, rugged type of man's man. He is movie star handsome. A striking man who could stand shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Clint Eastwood and Tom Selleck. And my Dad was a people person. He enjoyed talking with people, and getting to know them. I'm not sure he ever met a stranger. People were drawn to my Dad. He had that charisma. When he walked in a room everyone knew he was there, but not for any reason other than he had a way of filling a room. A disarming smile and sparkling green eyes. And he had this scar above his left eye from going through the windshield of a corvette at the age of 17. The scar begins above his eye and curves up into his hairline. Somehow it just added to his good looks.

I was his only child. His Goog. A nickname I earned as a baby because my eyes were so big. And it was what he called me until he passed away. I have vivid memories of so many times and so many places when he would look and me and in a quiet low voice say, "I love you".

So it was no surprise today while I sat at the computer reading my friends posts about their fathers, that when I looked over to my right I heard those familiar words again from him.

I know Daddy, I love you too.

Nice work if you can get it!

As I mentioned in my Change! post, the challenge of pursuing my handbag designing full-time is a little daunting. A big help is you all have been so incredibly supportive and encouraging (especially my Burnham family peeps!!) of my following a new path.

I knew my choice would require a much leaner lifestyle and I made my peace with that prior to resigning my job. (I won't say goodbye Nordies, I'll just say see ya soon!) Starbucks has been replaced with a cup of joe from Mom's Cafe/Doggie Daycare. My pretty girl Allie, (my car) now sits in the garage while I drive my Dad's little green jeep. And Mecca, (aka, The Home Goods Store) is now Saturday morning garage sale hopping with my mom.

So it was a HUGE surprise to hear (through a very lovely friend) that a previous boss of mine had heard I no longer worked down in San Diego and wanted to talk to me about working for him again. I had worked for him right after I finished college. He and his wife design and build high-end custom homes. He has a side business as a glass blower, she as an artist, and he has a brand new company making and selling paddle boards. They needed someone in the office part-time to pay the bills, manage the fund accounts for the custom homes, take care of their rental properties and basically do whatever was needed to keep everything flowing. I would be able to set my own hours and days, come and go at my discretion and they understood my bags were my primary focus.

So I have a part-time job! 5 minutes from my house. (all back roads!) I work for a really cool couple. (Did I mention that the office is part of their amazing custom home?) And a little of the "pay-the-bills" pressure has been alleviated.

Nice work if you can get it!

Change. Like it? Can't stand it?

Ok, so I'm one of the weirdos that like change. I think I get bored easily, so for me change keeps my brain clicking. But I'm no different than most in that even though I embrace change, (bake a cake when I see it coming, as my dad used to say) it still can be one of those things that is a little scary.

And voila! X marks the spot. That is where I find myself.

Suffice it to say I haven't been happy in my 9-5 for over a year now. I adored my peeps (co-workers), but I disliked my two-hour commute. Even more, I was always worn out by the time I got home. Something about that hour to hour and 30 minutes (fingers crossed that there weren't any accidents to delay traffic even longer) trek home, was draining for me. Once home, I found I didn't want to do anything. Most nights I would plop myself down in front of the internet with dinner and then drag myself to bed only to start the whole thing over again at 4:30 the next morning. Over the past year I gained (eeek...) 35 lbs. Getting it off without any form of exercise was impossible. Ugh...I was so unhappy. And so after months of thought I resigned from my job. Yesterday was my last day.

Yesterday was such an emotional day for me. Even though I was doing what was right for me, it was still such a hard step to take. I'm not much of a crying type of person (my mom calls me hard-hearted-Hannah) but yesterday I definitely shed my share of tears. But after the waterworks ended, I realized I felt such a weight (not literal lbs. mind you, although that would have been welcome) lift off of me. It was finally done. Over. I felt, well, free.

Today, my internal clock woke me up at the usual time, but I stayed in bed till 5:30. I'm a total morning person and one of the major things I have missed about having to commute an hour to work, was that I didn't get to start my day off with a cup of coffee and a comfy chair at the local Panera. I had really missed that. So that is where I was a few minutes after 6 this morning. A cup of yummy Panera coffee, my iPad and me. It was so nice.

The task of making my bag designing a success is so daunting! Jeez, the pressure I feel inside is no fun. But, I want to see where it can go. I hope it is a huge success, but if it isn't, I'm ok with that too.

Spring MBE 2012 Collection

u·nique[yoo-neek] adjective
1. existing as the only one or as the sole example; single; solitary in type or characteristics:
2. having no like or equal; unparalleled; incomparable:

You are one among billions of people who inhabit this earth, yet there is no one just like you. Society tells us what we should look like, sound like and what box we should fit in. Try as we might, we can never seem to get all of ourselves into just one box. Could it be you were never meant to be like everyone else?

Each bag I design is unique. When I began creating and designing bags, I decided I wouldn't make the same bag twice. When I sit down with the fabric and begin planning out a bag, I let the pieces inspire me. Each bag takes on its own characteristics. It is....well, unique. And why not? After all, there is only one you.

This bag is lovingly created in celebration of my amazing Daddy. His fierce love lives inside my heart. I am truly and undoubtedly, forever Daddy's girl.
